Mac, OBS and Streaming Audio Right

OBS has for some time been working on it’s new version of OBS which is called OBS studio, and is cross platform. Finally we are free from having to faff about with WireCast, we can now just plug and play and Stream away. BUT WAIT it’s not just that simple!

If you ever tried Minecraft’s in game streaming it will at least (force) prompt you to download additional required software to get you going.

This software (whilst not needed, (well it’s not but you are a idiot if you don’t setup your audio properly)) will get your Audio going properly on OBS streaming when you are not using additional Hardware.

This piece of software is called Soundflower, and is an example of Virtual Audio Cabling, which basically creates a software based Sound Card inside your computer in order to route audio more usefully!

Installing

So first things first, grab yourself a copy of OBS Studio, you can find the latest version on GitHub here. Download and install!

Next we’ll grab a copy of SoundFlower which is on their site here or GitHub here.

SoundFlower will need you to restart your Computer.

Getting Setup

Lets fire up OBS Studio:

OBS 0.9.1

I’ve got a few extra scenes setup, but this is the layout you’ll be presented with!

We are going to add a source, (first make a scene of course) in this case a “Audio Output Capture”

Audio Selection

And then, to keep things simple, just select the SoundFlower 2 Channel. We don’t need to do anything wacky.

Input Select

Finally we need to change the Sound Settings under System Preferences. So open System Preferences and Sound. And select Soundflower (2ch) as the Output device.

System Prefs Sound

Now suddenly everything will go quiet as all your audio is being sent to OBS/Soundflower: (it’s good to check that OBS is actually detecting at this point)

Audio Monitoring

We need to route the Audio from your computer via Soundflower back to Speakers/headphones. For this open SoundflowerBed:

SoundFlowerBed

It’s under Applications/Soundflower, this fires up a Menu Item in the Top Dock

Top Menu

Just click that, and send the Soundflower (2ch) back to “Built in Output/headphones” And now both you and OBS can hear everything.

Soundflower Routing

Your computer’s audio is now sent to this device and captured by OBS.

(You can tell as my mic here is picking up my speakers):

Preview

And there we go 🙂

BONUS

(Billy May’s Voice) BUT WAIT THERES MORE!

Xbox 360 Controller on Mac under Yosemite?

Unofficial Release 0.14 works fine and it’s on GitHub here

BONUS BONUS

Now what do you do if you get Beachball of Death when trying to use the SoundflowerBed Icon from the menu?

First open Terminal (sorry).
Then type:

ps aux | grep Soundflowerbed.app

Then you’ll see something like this:

SoundflowerBed Hunt

Then type:

kill 9331

Where 9331 is replaced with the number here:

SoundflowerBed Kill

It is VERY important you kill the right thing. As otherwise you might break something and have to restart the whole computer.

Once you have kill’ed SoundflowerBed, just reopen and all should be good.

life this week

This week has been Busy and its Only Tuesday!

So Xbox Live is currently down, which has borked a shed load of sites related, for example all gamertag data, and my output over at H3Wheelmen is stuck saying X is online in Y, even tho Xbox Live is down.

Its rumoured they are doing some of the Xbox Updates needed for Facebook/Last.fm/Twitter support, and of course the up coming Sky TV for the UK.

We shall see.

In other news The Big Surf Island is now out for download on Xbox Live for Burnout Paradise, will be playing that later.

Its living dead in this Weekends Double XP for Halo3.

The new scripts for 360gaming [dot] net are coming along.

And Finally in Week 4 of Google Summer of Code 2009, I have started my Project, well got PHP5.3RC3 installed and running, as Aptitude CMS needs Namespace Support. Apparently PHP5.3 is going stable in a couple of weeks so I am told.

However Life has been strange this week, I’ve had some odd dreams before waking up, which have been really off putting, but the nature of the dreams means I should keep it quiet.

Anywho I am off to Silverstone this weekend, to help a friend run one of the VIP tents for the British Grand Prix, so it should be good fun

Time to get back to work, so catch you on the flip side

Xbox 360 E3 2009

I got assailed with a “Are the Rumours True”, so I click thru and find Xbox.com will be broadcasting the Microsoft/Xbox 360 E3 Press conference LIVE! So F**k it tune in at 6:30pm BST.

So there I was, checking my emails, in pops the usual Xbox 360 Newsletter, for once I decided to read it, “Tonight all will be revealed”

I got assailed with a “Are the Rumours True”, so I click thru and find Xbox.com will be broadcasting the Microsoft/Xbox 360 E3 Press conference LIVE! So F**k it tune in at 6:30pm BST.

Rock Band meh, Beatles on Stage ++

(I missed the Natal Stuff, but will check that out later via XboxLive Dashboard)

Tony Hawx and Forza 3, Tony Hawx new Controller, (its a Skateboard), Forza Motorosport 3 (full title), has a new set of amazing physics, as well as the ability to create Hi-Def films in game (Bungie stylee almost?).

Then comes the Whistle Whoosh sound, its Crackdown 2, about time they made a sequel, I don’t have 100% completion on Crackdown, but have finished the story, an epic game, looking forward to the sequel.

Then Splinter Cell (no), but does look good.

Then on stage comes Tom Statten, from Bungie….

As expected Halo ODST is shown, with working live demo, it looks EPIC, and not forgetting the return of the Halo1 Style Pistol!

Then, “we have been working on a super secet project”………

HALO REACH!!!

And then, we find out you get a Beta Multiplayer invite with Halo ODST!

EPIC.

At that point I had to go to work, running Fruity on a Monday, with S Club (3) and Sash, throughly enjoyed Sash! EPIC-NESS apologies to the Bar Staff however, I over strobed….

Anywho, so I get home, wack Burnout Paradise in (arrived yesterday), started downloading the update (their update system is different to other games, and twas nearly a Gig in size), so I thought I would just check the E3 panel on the dashboard, where I find Last.fm, Twitter, and Facebook are coming to Xbox360 (share achievements, pictures etc), as shown by the rather fine Felicia Day, of The Guild.

All that and SkyTV is coming to my Xbox.

Excuse me I need to go do some work now to pay for all these new things I has to buy…..
